How the New Family Law Changes in 2024 may Impact Property Settlements and Family Violence Cases
The Family Law Amendment Bill 2024 has officially passed, and it’s bringing some significant changes to Australia’s family law system. These reforms, effective Mid 2025, are designed to protect families, ensure fair outcomes, and prioritise safety. (This is not legal advice, this is a general discussion please always see your lawyer to see how it applies to your case)
💼 What’s New?
Here are the highlights:
💥 Family Violence in Property Settlements
Courts will now consider the impact of family violence, including economic abuse, when dividing assets. This is a monumental step in ensuring fairer settlements for victim-survivors.
🐾 Companion Animals in Settlements
Finally, clarity on who gets to keep the family pet! Courts will now treat companion animals with consideration in property disputes.
👶 Improved Safety for Children
Children’s Contact Services (CCS) will now require accreditation to ensure safe and professional environments for separated families.
💬 Privacy Matters
Sensitive counseling records and therapeutic information will be protected, so victims can feel safe seeking help without fear of their private matters being exposed in court.
